Story: Around 9:45 in the morning firefighters were alerted by neighbors about a house being on fire. Alachua, LaCrosse, Melrose, and High Springs fire teams worked together to extinguish the flames. The cause of the fire is still unknown, but the possibility of foul play is very unlikely. Luckily no one was in the double-wide trailer when it burned down. Neighbors commented on knowing the owners of the home, who did not want to comment on the fire, and on how nice of a family they were.
Problem: The problem in this story is that this family is currently without a home, because of a fire. Their home was destroyed while they were away, and now they must deal with the problem of having to find a new home and deal with insurance companies.
Who has problem: The Monteocha family now has this new problem. They are the people that lived in this trailer, and now they have the problem of not having a home.

Story: There was a four-vehicle accident on I-75 involving three semi trucks. This accident left lumber scattered across the interstate, and forced all three southbound lanes to be closed. This incident happened Thursday morning south of County Road 484. The accident occurred around 6:05 in the morning, and it forced many motorists to find alternate routes. Two people, a man and a woman, were taken to the hospital following the crash, but no one had life threatening injuries. All southbound lanes were closed for about two hours, and there was a traffic jam that stretched for many miles.
Problem: The problem in this story is that there was a traffic incident which caused all of the southbound lanes to be closed. This caused a major traffic jam. Also, the people involved in the crash had some health problems because of the crash, and problems that their vehicles endured.
Who has problem: People driving southbound had the problem that all lanes were closed. They had to either wait until the lanes were reopened, or they had to find alternative routes. Also, the people involved in the crash had the problems of having to go to the hospital for injuries, and the problem that their cars now have because of the crash. Lastly, the emergency response teams had the problem of having to move the lumber blocks and fix the traffic jam.

Story: After 11 p.m. on Thursday, only two lanes were left open on Newberry Road west of Interstate 75. The reason for this is that an overhead sign structure is being removed. All of the lanes were to be reopened before Friday morning.
Problem: The problem is that with only two lanes open for traffic, there will be slow traffic around this area. People will have to take a longer time to get through this part of town, and if they do not account for this they might be late to where they are headed.
Who has problem: The people driving through this area are the ones that have a problem. They might need to find an alternative route to avoid the traffic that could build up because of this lane closure.

Link 4: Weather Postpones Hall of Fame Ceremony: http://infoweb.newsbank.com.lp.hscl.ufl.edu/resources/doc/nb/news/15A8E38F6C15D3E0?p=AWNB
Story: Due to the weather conditions in the Charlotte region, the NASCAR Hall of Fame will stop its Induction Ceremony and Fan Appreciation Day activities. It will move the induction ceremony to from Friday, January 22nd, to Saturday, January 23rd. This is due to the anticipated ice and snow that is expected to accumulate on Friday. Fan appreciation day activities will be cancelled through Saturday, January 23rd. NASCAR will not be able to reschedule a Fan Appreciation Day program, but later next week it will announce any options to accommodate fans that have secured autograph session tickets.
Problem: The problem is that the NASCAR Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony and the Fan Appreciation Day program have been postponed because of bad weather. Also, NASCAR will not be able to reschedule the Fan Appreciation Day program.
Who has problem: The fans along with Hall of Fame inductees and NASCAR, all suffer from this problem. The fans will not be able to join in the Fan Appreciation Day program which was suppose to happen. Inductees will have to wait, and possibly change their travel plans to be able to be a part of the Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony. NASCAR has to find a way to accommodate fans that had all ready purchased secure autograph session tickets. Also, NASCAR will now have a financial problem with have to change around the dates of the different events, along with helping out fans.

Apparently, the man was also involved in a hit-and-run before the officers began the chase. He was arrested for this crime while all ready in jail. As police pursued the car, which had no front tire on the passenger's side, the man attempted to elude them while recklessly driving. The man ran a red light, and narrowly avoided hitting multiple vehicles. When the man reached Aviara Apartments, he finally came to a stop near one of the apartment buildings. During the hit-and-run accident, this man hit a motorcyclist. The motorcyclist was thrown off of his vehicle, but only sustained minor injuries.
Problem: The problem was that a man was involved in a high-speed chase with police officers, and in a hit-and-run.
Who has Problem: The man that was arrested for these crimes now faces the problems that will come from his actions. Also, the motorcyclist that was involved in the hit-and-run could have health problems, and that problems from any damages that his motorcycle might now have.

  1. To be quite honest, I'm kind of confused how these stories are "opportunities". It seems to me more like the 5 o' clock news.

  2. Luis, I enjoyed your choice of news articles although they problems addressed are not necessarily opportunities per se. However, "Newberry Road lanes to close tonight for repair" has potential opportunities for business persons to solve. An alternate route added would lesson the amount of traffic, which in turn is better for the people of the community.
